Forgiveness is typically defined as the process of concluding resentment, indignation or anger as a result of a perceived offense, difference or mistake, and/or ceasing to demand punishment or restitution. The Oxford English Dictionary defines forgiveness as 'to grant free pardon and to give up all claim on account of an offence or debt'. The concept and benefits of forgiveness have been explored in religious thought, the social sciences and medicine. Forgiveness may be considered simply in terms of the person who forgives including forgiving themselves, in terms of the person forgiven and/or in terms of the relationship between the forgiver and the person forgiven. In some contexts, forgiveness may be granted without any expectation of restorative justice, and without any response on the part of the offender (for example, one may forgive a person who is incommunicado or dead). In practical terms, it may be necessary for the offender to offer some form of acknowledgment, apology, and/or restitution, or even just ask for forgiveness, in order for the wronged person to believe himself able to forgive.

Most world religions include teachings on the nature of forgiveness, and many of these teachings provide an underlying basis for many varying modern day traditions and practices of forgiveness. Some religious doctrines or philosophies place greater emphasis on the need for humans to find some sort of divine forgiveness for their own shortcomings, others place greater emphasis on the need for humans to practice forgiveness of one another, yet others make little or no distinction between human and/or divine forgiveness.

What are some bible verses that speak of forgiveness?
Q. I would like to do some reading on scripture that talks about being worthy of forgiveness. I feel unworthy of forgiveness for some things that I have done in my past and I need some passages that would help me with this. Thank you.

A. But nobody is worthy of forgiveness. And nobody has to try and be worthy. Because forgiveness from Jesus is based on his grace, a free gift received by believing in Jesus alone for salvation :) When you believe in Jesus alone for salvation, then you are forgiven all sins past, present, and future, no matter what those sins are. That simple :) The truth about Jesus is that the only way to be saved and to get into heaven and avoid being sent to eternal hell, is by believing in faith alone that Jesus, who is God, died for our sins on the cross as full payment for all our sins, and then Jesus rose from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Believe this and you will be in heaven, no matter what!

What's the point of remaining sexually pure until marriage, if you can just ask for forgiveness?
Q. I am finally taking my religion seriously now, but this is a question that is bugging me lately. The bible says that if you commit sin you can ask for forgiveness and be forgiven. But what about sex before marriage? That is a sin, but it cannot be reversed. You are only a virgin once. Are you forgiven for it if you ask for forgiveness? If so, why why are we instructed to wait until marriage, if we can just ask for forgiveness if it happens?

A. I agree with your thoughts. I think sex before marriage is not a sin for marriage is only a promise to be together forever, if you already have that going on with your other half then why is it a sin. then again the church claims everything is a sin...

When you ask forgiveness is it for evil done in ignorance and do you turn to Allah quickly?
Q. 31:17Forgiveness is only incumbent on Allah toward those who do evil in ignorance then turn quickly to Allah. These are they toward whom Allah relenteth. Allah is ever Knower, Wise. I can see it is having an effect on the ignorant.
